This painting is from a dispersed Ragamala series executed at Amber, circa 1680. This particular series was created in a more traditional Rajasthani style with less of the Mughal influences that can be seen in slightly later 18thcentury sets from Jaipur after the capital moved in 1728. For other examples from the series see Spink, Indian Miniature Painting, Exhibition Catalogue, London 1987, nos. 23-25. For a slightly later Ragamala series from Malwa, see T. Falk and M. Archer, Indian Miniatures in the India Office Library, London, 1981, no. 559, i-vi.
